The Writing Across the Curriculum Program was created by the General Education Task Force to support writing instruction at all levels of education at Appalachian.  Beginning in fall 2009, students will begin a new program of writing courses in the Composition Program and in their major fields, and in 2010 first-year students will begin an ePortfolio project.

The Vertical Writing Model: The vertical writing model was designed to give students continued support for writing during their careers at Appalachian, with writing experience each year, and a structure to archive writing for both students and the university.

 

  •  Composition Program:  Writing Across the Curriculum/WAC

English 1000—introducing students to process writing at the university level, stressing development of voice and authority, rhetorical analysis, research, and critical thinking skills

English 2001—this new course, beginning in fall 09, will introduce students to writing and reading in the university, focusing on rhetorical strategies of writing in different disciplines and building on skills learned in Eng 1000

  • Writing in the Disciplines (junior and senior writing)/WID

Junior Writing in the Discipline—designed by the major department, these courses will build on rhetorical strategies students have learned in composition courses and offer opportunities for writing in the major field at entry level

Capstone—most capstones will include a writing component at an advanced level in the major and/or a reflective writing based on the capstone experience

 

ePortfolio Project

Beginning in fall 2010, students will keep an ePorttfolio of writing from the four levels of writing courses:  in each writing course, faculty will require entries for the ePortfolio, which will be a resource for students in further education or career.  The WAC Program will use ePortfolios to assess writing at Appalachian and to assist departments in assessing writing in the disciplines.
